YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING...

“Why do we introduce Handwork, in a Waldorf Kindergarten classroom, if knitting will begin in 1st grade?”

Around Kindergarten, children begin to develop greater fine motor capacity and attention spans: skills that will lend themselves to a child being able to sit for longer periods of time, for more traditional learning and eventually knitting, as they enter the grades.

For some children, working on a project, for an extended period of time, can prove quite challenging and is strengthened by practice. Integrating art, imagery and movement into activities that require deep focus, and a strongly-formed will, can enrich and support this developing skill set.

The 5-7 year old child is also beginning to possess the self-regulation necessary for longer tasks that can include basic pattern recognition, a prolonged sensory experience and fine motor skill work. This lays a solid foundation for math and handwriting, in the future, and can also be supportive for some sensory-seeking children.

In reality, many caregivers haven’t had the time or opportunity to learn any kind of Handwork, themselves, even though they would love to learn and expose their children to these ancient arts.

More over, seeing the incredible knitting, crochet and embroidery projects that older Waldorf students are able to create is awe-inspiring but can feel out of reach if you are unable to enroll your child in a Waldorf school or find a Waldorf teacher to instruct you, in-person.

The truth is that we all start somewhere.
